How to support student writing

There’s a lot of talk about how to improve students' levels of writing. I’m not saying it’s not needed but I find much of it either dull or unrealistic. So I thought I’d show you a video of it in action.

As you’d expect on this blog, there is a visual approach. But here, we get a real peek inside the writer’s execution.

Before you see the video, you should know that the map the student is using was created by the student and, importantly, thoroughly explained verbally to a partner.

Then as you view the video notice the constant references to the map. This establishes organization in the writing and directs what is to be written next. With organization handled, meaning established, and working memory catered for, the student’s mind is free to concentrate on the writing.

Lastly, this was taken during one of Model Learning’s LearnWise courses for students. If you are interested in getting results like this, or even of leading the day with our course materials (slides and handbook) contact us at info@modellearning.com or call us on 01277 202812
